Therefore, burning a paraffin candle (even unscented) is similar to burning diesel fuel. Combine this with synthetic fragrance, chemical fixatives, dyes, synthetic glosses and bleached cotton or lead wicks, and you come up with a toxic potion that is emitted into the air every time you light a candle. When you breathe this toxic air, some of these harmful chemicals enter your body and bloodstream. The soot from paraffin wax contains 11 documented toxins, three of which are known carcinogens (cancer causing) chemicals (formaldehyde, toluene and benzene). Other chemicals include vinyl chloride, acetaldehyde, and acrolein . In a confined space (like our homes) this alone can have a profound impact on indoor air quality. Poor air quality can lead to a multitude of health problems. Health problems have been more evident and serious in the past five or so years, due to increased use of highly scented candles. And let's not forget the environmental consequences. The same pollutants that are being emitted into our indoor air also make their way outdoors. With 7 out of 10 households burning candles on a regular basis, this air pollution adds up. Also, paraffin comes from petroleum, a non-renewable resource that cannot be replaced once it is gone. Buying regular candles also supports our dependency on oil. The first thing you must know is that many candles labeled "soy" contain a blend of soy wax and paraffin wax and most of them use synthetic fragrances and dyes. In addition to this, much of the soy wax that is used to make candles is grown with the use of pesticides, herbicides, and is genetically modified. However, the soy wax that we use comes from a company that does not use any of these. Also, our wax comes from soybeans that are grown exclusively in the United States, supporting our farmers and economy. Soy wax is non-toxic, clean burning, biodegradable, cleans up with soap and water, burns 30 to 40% longer than paraffin (making soy candles a more economical choice), and comes from a renewable resource. Soy wax also melts at a low temperature, which requires less energy to make a candle and is safer around kids and pets. However, because of its low melt point, it makes the wax a little less stable than paraffin or palm, which is why 100% soy candles are in containers. The only other disadvantage is that soy does not hold scent very well, so more fragrance is required to make soy candles smell strong enough. So, even though there are a few minor drawbacks to using soy wax, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages! When you burn a candle the melted wax begins to form a pool. This is referred to as the burn pool. This burn pool creates a future burn pattern for the candle (or "memory"). Therefore, if a candle is not allowed to pool to the edges, the next time you light it, it will most likely not burn past that point and you may end up with a tunnel effect. If you are burning cheap candles, this is likely to happen anyway. The reason most authentic soy candles are in jars is because soy wax is soft and vulnerable to temperature changes. Jars help them to burn more effectively and remain more stable. ReKindle Candle Company is one of the few candle companies that makes a truly natural candle. All of our candles are made from 100% natural waxes that come from renewable plant sources. We use 100% natural, plant based oils to scent our candles. We use lead-free wicks made of unbleached cotton. We currently do not use dye due to the lack of a natural source for candle making. There are very few companies with standards as high as ours. You WILL NOT find a comparable candle at a comparable price! Synthetic fragrances may be stronger and cheaper, but there are toxins and chemicals found in most of them that irritate the lungs and trigger allergies. BEWARE! Many companies say their candles are all natural because they use soy wax, but still use synthetic fragrances. Others even claim to use all natural or essential oils, but don't! Just because it sounds natural (cucumber melon, lavender, citrus sunshine, etc.) doesn't mean it is. We guarantee all of our fragrances are 100% plant based and natural. If you havent noticed, we like natural... Plus it offers a neutral and ethereal look that will go with any decor. When you compare quality paraffin candles with any of our candles, you will discover that our candles actually cost you less! Our prices are comparable to quality paraffin candles PLUS our soy candles burn 30% longer than paraffin candles (therefore costing you 30% less!). Our palm wax also burns slower than paraffin, but not quite as slow as soy. Oh, and don't forget they are better for you and the environment! ENJOY!
These are approximate figures.
Votives It depends on many factors. The size of the room, the strength of the candle, and air circulation. Below is a general guidline using our candles that are at the medium fragrance level (see our scents page).
Half Bath (6 x 8): 1 medium jar or 3 tealights In most cases, yes. However, it is recommended that you try using it on a small area to be sure that you do not have an allergic reaction. To use on cuticles, hands or as a massage oil, let the candle burn until the melted pool has nearly reached the edge. Blow candle out and use the soft, but unmelted wax from around the edge of the candle. Relite if desired.
